Walking the Tatras on a Day Trip From Krakow

Park entry is 11 zł a day. The lakes and high valleys will take most of the daylight on foot, though two lifts put you on a ridge with no walking at all.

Walking the Tatras on a Day Trip From Krakow
Krakow, Polen

A day in the Tatra National Park costs 11 zł, and every walk begins at a green-and-white kiosk with a chamois on the sign. Guided day trips from Krakow run seven days a week. From 1 March to 30 November the park bans walking between dusk and dawn.

Park entry at the trailhead kiosks

Tatrzański Park Narodowy (Tatra National Park) sells the one ticket that covers the trail network, and it is the same ticket whichever gravel trailhead you start from. Seven days cost 55 zł. A group day ticket covers up to 10 people for 99 zł, bought at the gate or online by QR code. The kiosks are small huts under wooden shingle roofs, with limestone peaks and spruce forest behind them. Most of the walks below cost nothing beyond this.

Morskie Oko and the road from Palenica Białczańska

Morskie Oko (from Palenica Białczańska) is the walk most people mean when they say they are going into the Tatras. The road is 9 km of asphalt, 2 to 2.5 hours each way, with about 400 m of climb spread along it, and it is a public trail with no restriction on the size of a party. Coach groups use it heavily. At the top the lake lies deep green-blue under the near-vertical grey granite walls of the Mieguszowieckie peaks, with a timber shingled PTTK hut on the moraine shore and boulder scree running into the water.

If the legs are not in it, the TPN e-bus runs to Włosienica for 69 zł up, park fee included, and 58 zł down.

Rusinowa Polana (blue trail from the Palenica Białczańska ticket huts) gives the High Tatra panorama you can reach without climbing anything. The trail is wide and part of it is boardwalk. It crosses a 20-hectare sloping hay meadow between 1,180 m and 1,300 m, scattered with wooden shepherds' huts and grazing sheep, and across the valley stands the jagged skyline of Gerlach, Vysoká and Rysy. The Wiktorówki sanctuary is a short detour on.

The five lakes and Poland's highest hut

You reach Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich on foot, either from Morskie Oko or from Palenica Białczańska, and the walk costs no more than park entry. Five dark alpine tarns sit in a bare granite bowl above the treeline, with no shade and no shelter between them.

Schronisko PTTK stands alone on the grass at 1,671 m, steep-pitched stone and timber with red shutters, and it is the highest mountain hut in Poland. It is open to all walkers from 08:00 to 21:00 year round. Beds are limited, so a group should book ahead; a day visitor just walks in. A 2026-season bed runs from 50 zł for floor bedding to 380 zł for a double, plus a 2.50 zł climate fee.

Flat tracks from Kiry and Siwa Polana

Dolina Kościeliska (from Kiry) is the gentlest of the serious valleys. The track is broad white gravel beside a braided stream between pale limestone crags, 5.6 km to the Hala Ornak hut in 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours, and flat enough for a pushchair. Wooden shepherd huts stand on a cleared meadow along the way.

Jaskinia Mroźna opens off the same valley from 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, for 11 zł on top of park entry. You walk the lit low passage through without a guide, single file past wet rock walls.

Dolina Chochołowska (green trail from Siwa Polana) takes 2.5 hours up and 2 hours back on park entry alone. The valley ends in an open grazing meadow at 1,146 m with grey limestone ridges on three sides. Schronisko PTTK na Polanie Chochołowskiej sits on it, a long low timber building holding 121 beds in rooms of 2 to 14 people, the largest hut in the Polish Tatras.

Short walks from the edge of town

Dolina Strążyska is the easiest real Tatra walk you can start from the streets, 2.4 km and 40 to 60 minutes each way. From Krupówki it is 25 to 30 minutes on foot, or local bus 12. A wide stony forest road follows a loud shallow stream to Siklawica, a thin 23 m waterfall splitting over a dark rock face under the south wall of Giewont.

Dolina Białego climbs from the edge of town into a narrow limestone gorge where timber footbridges cross a clear stream a dozen times and mossy walls close overhead. Loop it up over Sarnia Skała and you finish on a bare rock platform at 1,377 m looking straight at Giewont, all on park entry. The path is narrow and broken by bridges. Small parties manage it; a coach-sized group will not.

Hotel Górski PTTK Kalatówki (up the Brata Alberta road from Kuźnice) can only be walked to, on a cobbled granite road through spruce, and it sits alone on a clearing at 1,198 m. It was built in 1938, inside the national park, timber and stone under a deep overhanging roof. The hotel holds 86 beds in rooms of one, two and five, with a restaurant and two cafés. The tourist café opens 09:00 to 16:00.

The cable car and the funicular

Kasprowy Wierch cable car (PKL), Krakow
Kasprowy Wierch cable car (PKL), Krakow

Kasprowy Wierch cable car (PKL) puts a non-walker on a high ridge in 20 minutes. A yellow-and-grey gondola crosses a single span over bare rock to a concrete summit station and a white meteorological observatory dome at 1,987 m, with the Slovak ridgeline filling the horizon. A high-season round trip at the window is 165 zł, or 129 zł reduced. Tickets are timed slots and go on sale up to 30 days ahead; book yours before you travel in high season.

Gubałówka funicular (PKL) runs a red car up a straight steep grassed incline to a ridge-top promenade of souvenir stalls at 1,123 m, where the whole Tatra wall lies opposite across the basin. A return is 44 zł online and 49 zł at the window, 09:00 to 20:00. The ridge top has restaurants and a brewery, and both take parties. You are looking at the mountains from outside them rather than standing in them.

The museum, the chapel and the old cemetery

Muzeum Tatrzańskie im. dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego (Main Building), Krakow
Muzeum Tatrzańskie im. dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego (Main Building), Krakow

Muzeum Tatrzańskie im. dra Tytusa Chałubińskiego (main building, Krupówki) gathers Tatra geology, wildlife and highland culture under one roof, behind a white facade with a steep shingled gable and a carved timber porch. Inside, a mounted chamois and a bear stand beside glass-painted folk art. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:15, and closes Monday and Tuesday. Unguided visits need no reservation.

Kaplica na Jaszczurówce (Chapel of the Sacred Heart) sits on the road out towards Morskie Oko and makes a five-minute stop on the way. Stanisław Witkiewicz built it between 1904 and 1907 entirely in timber: dark larch logs, a tall shingled spire, a carved sunburst gable, stained glass in folk-geometric patterns, pine forest tight around the walls. Entry is free and unticketed in daylight hours. Keep clear of Mass times.

Cmentarz Zasłużonych na Pęksowym Brzyzku (Old Cemetery) holds around 500 graves behind a low stone wall and a shingled gate, 250 of them Tatra and Podhale figures. Nearly every marker is a carved artwork, hand-cut wooden crosses and folk ironwork with glass-painted plaques, under tall trees. Entry is 3 zł, or 1.50 zł reduced. It opens 07:00 to 19:00 from 1 May to 10 November, and 07:30 to 18:00 the rest of the year.

After the walking

Chochołowskie Termy is where the legs go after a long valley day. The outdoor pools steam, swimmers sit in snow-rimmed water, and the Tatra ridge shows beyond the pool deck under a timber-clad highland roofline. It opens every day, 09:00 to 22:00, and to 23:00 on some Fridays and Saturdays. Low-season pool entry is 85 zł for an adult. A child aged 3 to 16 pays 55 zł. An evening ticket after 19:00 starts at 49 zł, and family or 2+1 tickets start at 199 zł. The complex is large enough to absorb coach parties.

Wielka Krokiew im. Stanisława Marusarza is the biggest ski jump in Poland and the town's emblem, a concrete-and-steel inrun driving up the wooded slope of Krokiew hill above a stepped stadium outrun. It is open to visitors year round, 09:00 to 17:00, with hours shifting around competition weekends. A chairlift runs to the jumpers' start gate. There is nothing to do there but take in the scale of it and the view back over the town.

Best time to go

Mid to late April is the crocus window. The Chochołowska meadow carries a purple carpet across the grass then, and that is when the valley is most photographed.

The Kasprowy Wierch cable car shuts from 19 October to 6 November 2026 for its annual technical inspection and reopens after 6 November. The Gubałówka funicular is confirmed operating, and it is the cheaper stand-in on those dates and on any day the summit is clouded in. Kalatówki closes its rooms from November to early December for maintenance while the tourist café stays open.

Walk the long valleys in the morning and keep the afternoon for the baths, the museum or the ridge promenade. If Morskie Oko is the plan, be at the Palenica Białczańska kiosks early.

Who the day suits

A visitor willing to spend the daylight hours on foot gets the most from Zakopane, because the distances here are measured in hours each way. Anyone who would rather not walk still gets a high ridge by cable car or funicular, and a meadow panorama on an easy boardwalk trail.

Practical notes

Plan around the closed days: the museum shuts Monday and Tuesday, the cable car for its autumn inspection, and Kalatówki's rooms for late-autumn maintenance. Book the lift slot and any hut bed before you travel, and buy park entry at the gate or by QR code.
