How to spend a day in Zakrzówek, Kraków's quarry district
Zakrzówek, Krakow

Kraków's best urban swim sits in a flooded limestone quarry, 300 bathers at a time on five floating pools moored against white-grey cliffs. Lifeguards work from 1 June to 30 September 2026. Out of season the clifftop path, the woods and the cave stay open and free.

Swimming at Park Zakrzówek

Park Zakrzówek (Zalew Zakrzówek), Krakow

Park Zakrzówek (ul. Norymberska) was an accident. Solvay cut limestone here, the pit filled in the 1990s, and the city ended up with a lake of vivid turquoise ringed by sheer rock. The park is ungated, entry is 0 zł, and so is the car park at the ul. Norymberska entrance.

The five pools are pale timber decking and steel rails, moored against the cliff at the southern end of the water, under clifftops covered in pine and scrub. On Mondays the platforms open 14:00 to 19:00; Tuesday to Sunday they run 8:00 to 19:00.

Numbers on the platforms are capped, so once the water is full the queue backs up along the path. Arrive early on a warm weekend, or split a large party and swim in turns.

The viewpoint above the north shore

The Zakrzówek clifftop viewpoint (off ul. Wyłom) is a bare limestone ledge above a vertical white cliff that drops into green-blue water. From it the quarry, Wawel Castle and the Kościuszko Mound line up in a single frame, the castle and the Old Town small on the horizon, the mound off to the left. Take the uphill path off ul. Wyłom on the reservoir's north side.

It is unstaffed and free, at any hour of the day. Some of the ledges are narrow and unfenced, so stand well back from the edge. This is the standard sunset stop at Zakrzówek, so time the walk to finish here.

Walking Las Skałki Twardowskiego

Las Skałki Twardowskiego, Krakow
Las Skałki Twardowskiego, Krakow

Las Skałki Twardowskiego (Zakrzówek) is the dry half of the district, 34 hectares of scrubby oak and pine on a low limestone hill. Four disused quarries sit inside it, grown over into city forest, their pale Jurassic walls bolted with routes and smudged with chalk on the holds. Climbers have worked this rock for more than a century, and it is Poland's main dry-tooling venue.

The marked blue trail takes an hour to an hour and a half with stops at the viewpoints. Paths are dirt, with metal railings along the quarry rim and the odd overhang above you. The woods have no gate and no fee. To climb the walls you need your own gear and your own instructor.

Twardowski's Cave and Elvis Presley Avenue

Jaskinia Twardowskiego (Las Skałki Twardowskiego) is the biggest cave at Zakrzówek and one of the longest in the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura, more than 500 m of tight multi-level passage, named after Pan Twardowski, the sorcerer of Kraków legend. The scuffed earth approach path runs along a military unit's concrete wall, and the entrance is a low dark rock arch in the limestone face a few metres from it.

The cave is wholly undeveloped: no lighting, no handrails, and no one at the mouth to take a ticket. Bring a strong torch, see the first chamber, and go no further than that. Anything deeper needs caving experience and kit.

Aleja i Pomnik Elvisa Presleya (off the extension of ul. Pietrusińskiego) is on a woodland path at Zakrzówek's northern edge. Kraków's Elvis fans had been gathering at Skałki Twardowskiego since the 1970s, the city named the world's second Elvis Presley Avenue here in 2003, and Jerzy Bratańca's monument followed in 2005. The monument is a rough standing boulder, Elvis's face set into it and half-sunk in resin, with artificial flowers and burnt-out candles at its foot and a plain avenue sign on the path behind. It is free, open at any hour, and has no facilities.

Diving from the Water Sports Centre

Centrum Sportów Wodnych Zakrzówek (Stowarzyszenie Nautilus), Krakow
Centrum Sportów Wodnych Zakrzówek (Stowarzyszenie Nautilus), Krakow

Centrum Sportów Wodnych Zakrzówek (ul. Wyłom 20) opened on 24 October 2026 after years of delay, and it is what made organised diving at Zakrzówek legal again. Stowarzyszenie Nautilus runs it out of a low pavilion of pale concrete and glass on the quiet dog beach shore, with changing rooms, lockers and benches where divers prepare kit, wetsuits and cylinders leaning against the benches and the turquoise quarry behind. Clubs and squads are the main trade, and booking is by phone on 508 277 778 or 501 770 993.

The lake runs to 30 m with 15 m of visibility. Sunken props include a Fiat 125p, a bus and a van. A granite plaque honours Karol Wojtyła, who shifted limestone in this quarry in 1940 and 1941.

A diver day package is 60 zł. Lockers are 15 to 20 zł, and a filled cylinder is 50 zł for 12 l or 60 zł for 15 l.

The Vistula path along ul. Tyniecka

Zakrzówek's northern boundary is the river. Wiślana Trasa Rowerowa (ul. Tyniecka) carries the Vistula Cycle Route and EuroVelo 4 along the embankment there, flat asphalt on a grassy green flood bank, willows on the water side and the white limestone bluffs of Zakrzówek rising inland.

Turn west along ul. Tyniecka and the path runs 10 km to Tyniec Abbey. Turn east and you reach the Wawel bluff in 2.5 km. The path is public and free, and wide enough for walkers and rental bikes at once.

Karol Wojtyła's parish on ul. Konfederacka

Kościół św. Stanisława Kostki (ul. Konfederacka 6) is 2 km north-east of the quarry, a tall interwar brick-and-stone Salesian church with a blocky square tower on a quiet residential corner. Wojtyła belonged to this parish from 1938 to 1944, and he was on the quarry shift in February 1940 when he met Jan Tyranowski, the tailor and mystic who drew him into a clandestine Living Rosary. Tyranowski's tomb slab lies inside. John Paul II came back in 2002.

The interior is plain, lofty and whitewashed. Entry is free outside services, there is a donation box, and Kraków's licensed guides run a guided-visit scheme here. Avoid Mass times.

Cafe Zakrzówek and Panorama Zakrzówek

Cafe Zakrzówek, Krakow

Cafe Zakrzówek (ul. Wyłom 22) occupies the pavilion that used to hold the EkoEksperymentarium, two storeys of glass and timber with a 300 m² terrace overhanging the quarry rim. Tables and parasols look straight down on the water and the floating pools, the best seat in the park. Coffee and cake run 15 to 30 zł, and it opens daily 9:00 to 20:00. There are no bookings, and the terrace fills fast at the peak of summer. It is also the easiest coffee stop on the loop walk.

Panorama Zakrzówek (ul. Wyłom 20) opened in January 2026 as the district's second café, a small room on the ground floor of the Water Sports Centre building with seating outside on the dog beach. Cakes sit under glass at a plain modern counter and a picture window faces the lake's northern arm. Breakfast plates, cake and coffee come to 15 to 45 zł. Come here when the pool end is heaving; this shore stays calm.

Where to eat around Zakrzówek

Zacny Burger Milordzie (ul. Norymberska 1) is the nearest proper hot food to the bathing area, 600 m from the free car park and the pool entrance, and a long-standing Kraków burger name. The griddle sits in an open kitchen behind the counter and burgers arrive paper-wrapped on enamel trays, 35 to 45 zł. The room is small and built for takeaway, with a few pavement tables, so plan on eating in the park.

Bistro Praska (ul. Jana Pietrusińskiego 2) is the family stop on the walk between Zakrzówek and the river, near the Zwierzyniecki Bridge. Behind the low Dębniki building is a sandy garden with hammocks slung between the trees and a sandpit for children; inside there is a pizza oven with gingerbread stacked by the till. Polish and Italian mains and pizza run 35 to 65 zł, there is a children's menu, and it opens daily 12:00 to 21:00. The bistro takes family gatherings, training sessions and conferences, does catering and packs picnic baskets, and the garden absorbs the overflow.

Konfederacka Resto & Bar, Krakow
Konfederacka Resto & Bar, Krakow

Konfederacka Resto & Bar (ul. Konfederacka 4) does the best sit-down Polish cooking in the district, right beside the Wojtyła parish church. The dining room is low-lit dark timber and brick, with a seasonal menu card on each table and classics plated with a modern garnish. Mains start at 38 zł. It closes at 20:00 Monday to Wednesday and at 21:00 Thursday to Saturday. It also runs set menus and catering for weddings, corporate events and private dinners.

Mucho Gusto Restaurant & Chill Bar (ul. Prof. Stanisława Łojasiewicza 2) sits in the Convictus Cracovia lobby a short walk south of the quarry, and pours the nearest decent cocktail to Zakrzówek. Chef Michał Góra's Mediterranean plates run alongside pizzas and burgers, 40 to 70 zł, served on pale wood tables around a central bar island ringed with armchairs. Hours are 12:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday and 12:00 to 20:00 on Sunday. Reserve by phone or email; breakfast is a buffet.

A'Bracciate Pasta & Wine (ul. Mains are 60 to 90 zł. Seating is tight, so book ahead and keep the table small.

Where to stay in Zakrzówek

Apartamenty & Spa Zakrzówek (ul. Sodowa 7) is a modern low-rise block on a quiet residential street right under the Zakrzówek woods, 250 m from the Park 'Skały Twardowskiego' bus stop. The 22 units include apartments sleeping two to five with self-catering kitchens, and private parking sits out front. Nightly rates start at 230 to 250 zł. Stay here and you can be swimming before the day-trippers arrive.

The basement spa holds a Finnish sauna, a steam room and a jacuzzi at 20 zł per person an hour, or 100 zł an hour for exclusive use.

Planning the day

Diving takes a phone call to Stowarzyszenie Nautilus, and A'Bracciate takes a booking; everything else at Zakrzówek is free and ungated, so carry a torch for the cave and start early on a hot weekend. See the Krakow guide and the Krakow hotel search.

Zakrzówek — your questions

Can you go inside Twardowski's Cave?

The entrance and the first chamber are free. There is no gate and no guide, and the path to them runs along the military unit's wall. The cave has no lighting and no handrails, so bring a strong torch and stop at the main chamber. Beyond it the passage runs more than 500 m and needs caving experience and kit.

Where do you eat and drink at the lake itself?

Cafe Zakrzówek at ul. Wyłom 22 is open daily 9:00 to 20:00 and has a terrace over the swimming platforms, coffee and cake 15 to 30 zł. Panorama Zakrzówek at ul. How do you reach the Zakrzówek clifftop viewpoint?

Take the uphill path off ul. Wyłom on the reservoir's north side. It is free, unstaffed and open at all hours. The view lines up the quarry, Wawel Castle and the Kościuszko Mound in one frame. Some ledges are narrow and unfenced, so keep back from the edge.
